The men of the highly specialized 73rd maneuvered strings of pontoon rafts across waterways and connected them to provide temporary bridges. In water-logged Yukon Territory their services were essential to the road builders.
In one of their more spectacular efforts, the 73rd used a combination of barges and pontoons to provide transport across the Tagish River during the first three weeks of June. The 73rd moved two full regiments, the 93rd and the 340th, across the Tagish and worked 18 hours a day to do it. Between them the 93rd and the 340th accounted for over 1,000 vehicles, including D4 and even D8 dozers.
On the much larger span of Nisutlin Bay, they hauled men and equipment until the Bay froze, then they constructed a two foot thick road on top of the three foot thick ice so vehicles and men could cross.
